Different Types of RNA (Biology Mind Map) |
Description: This mind map includes the different kinds of RNA: mRNA, tRNA and rRNA, standing for messenger RNA, translator RNA, and ribosomal RNA. The first is responsible for moving genetic information from the nucleus to the cytoplasm within cells (from DNA to ribosomes who then translate the code into proteins). tRNA plays a role in this translation process by bringing amino acids, components of proteins, to the ribosomes. These tRNA's have two components: an anticodon which corresponds to a three letter sequence of nucleic acids within the mRNA and an attached amino acid which will be added to the growing polypeptide on the ribosome after that anticodon is matched into the correct place. There are 4^3 (i.e. the number of different available letters for nucleic acids (A, C, G, T) raised to the number of letters on anticodon) = 64 different possible tRNAs. However there are only approx. twenty different amino acids which means the the code has redundancy, often in the third position which is therefore known as the "wobble-position." rRNA plays a role in the formation of the large and small subunit of the ribosomes which the location where translation takes place and provides the necessary structure to facilitate the different interactions between the necessary components.
